This week, we’re proud to feature a Q&A with the extraordinarily talented Yvonne Christensen, an American Heritage Homes’ Design Consultant and Lead Designer! In addition to her interior design work, Yvonne is also a columnist for the St. George Magazine and is the Parade of Homes Interior Design Chair. Her tagline? “Let me inspire your interior so you can love your home again!”
1. Can you tell us a little bit about your business, and how you got to where you are today?
I started with a builder in 2010 and specialized in new construction design. I always wanted to be a designer, CAD was my favorite class in high school but I went to University for business. I recently finished my Diploma in interior design and have been taking on more and more interior design jobs over the past 3 years as well as the new construction design.
2. Who is your favorite designer?
Obviously one is Joanna Gaines, personally her style matches mine closely, I also really love Sarah Richardson and working with house plans a lot I have to mention Frank Lloyd Wright.
3. Who is your go-to Furniture & Decor Retailer, or who have you been using lately?
Locally, I really like Passport Furniture, I really love both Universal and Uttermost furniture companies as well.
4. Any new trends you have been using that you can share?
Lately I have been doing a lot more custom tile design, you can make a huge impact on a home with a little thought in each room. Tile is really huge right now on Pinterest and Instagram.
5. How do you balance work and home life?
Get up really early in the morning!
6. How did you get started in the Interior Design Industry?
I grew up asking my parents to drive me through different neighborhoods just so I could look at the houses, my Mom had a huge impact on me, we didn’t have a lot of money but she was always painting or sewing something. Who inspired you back then and who does today? I’m always inspired by working Moms, its hard to give up time with your children, a lot of women aren’t as lucky as me and may not love their jobs as much as I do but they still go to work everyday maybe because they have to or maybe because they want something for themselves.
7. Where do you find your inspiration?
I’m inspired constantly by other designers I follow on social media. I’m never surprised at the amount of talent out there.
8. If you could be anywhere in the world right now where would it be, and why?
Kelowna BC Canada, its home! I would love to travel the world but deep down I’m happiest in my hometown with my family.
9. What are you trying to improve on?
I’m really trying to be courageous when it comes to color. Doing color well is not easy and I will always try to improve in that area.
10. What do you think of iHomeRegistry?
I love it! Super easy to use and very helpful with communicating to my clients.
