Designer Spotlight Series: Construction2Style

Featured on this week’s Designer Spotlight Series are the lovely and talented Jamie and Morgan Molitor of Construction2Style! Construction2Style was one of the first five designers on our site, and have been such an amazing collaborator with us! They are a husband and wife construction and design duo from Minneapolis, Minnesota, with a knack for DIY and an eye for design.   They have also just launched their home goods store...and we pretty much want one of everything!  We scour their blog anytime we are needing great design advice. After this interview with Morgan, you will too!

1. How did you get started in the Interior Design & Construction Industry?

In 2009, Jamie got his carpentry degree with the goal of becoming a builder. In 2007, I got my Fashion Merchandising Degree, wanting to be a photo stylist for an Interior Design Photographer. So it was a dream come true when I not only found the man of my dreams, but that I could style homes, design and build handcrafted wood furniture alongside my very own husband.

In 2011, Jamie bought his first home in Andover, MN to flip. I, of course, wanted to show Jamie’s talents off to the world and created Construction2Style, starting off as a blog to journal and share their personal remodeling journey. At the launch of our blog, people started coming to us for custom built furniture pieces and to remodel and style their homes.

This launched our home remodeling business with a design, build, and style mentality.

2. Where do you find your inspiration?

Everywhere! From trade shows, to conferences, flea markets, nature, local shopping, social platforms, builders within the industry, our mentors and son, you name it- the options are endless. We also follow a handful of our favorite inspirational brands and people – similar and different – that are our daily go-to. My favorites are: Young House Love, Salvaged Soul, and Emily Henderson.  Jamie’s favorite’s are Manny Khoshbin and Secret Entourage.

3. What are your favorite design publications?

Apartment Therapy and So Domino are our favorite design publications that we seek inspiration from regularly.

4. When designing a cost-effective space, what are some key things to keep in mind?

Before we do investment properties, we are always thinking of ways to save cost when it comes to remodeling a home. When house hunting, we immediately check out the kitchen – can we save the cabinetry and just make new doors? Can we take down just 1 wall to create an open concept feel instead of 2, 3, or 4 walls? Can we re-purpose the cabinetry within any other rooms or create a larger kitchen island?

When we’re out shopping at thrift stores, flea markets, good will and come across a gem for under $10 and have no idea what to do with it…we buy it! ha! We always come across something we need when remodeling homes and instead of rushing out to buy items when we need you’ll pay more because you’re desperate. Where as we can go out into the garage and use some of our steals and think of clever ways to incorporate.

DIY where you can…there are a ton of fun things you can do yourself instead of paying someone to do them. Remodelaholic is loaded with home tutorials with videos – go check them out. I promise you’ll probably find any tutorial you need on there.

5. What pieces of furniture should you splurge and where should you save?
This is a hard one being we’re all about saving money. Like probably most people, our style changes so often with the trends, I try to never splurge on anything. The only time we’ve splurged is when we’ve run across a piece of vintage furniture that is a one of a kind – that you’ll never find again. A classic piece of furniture or decor. I’ve also been known to splurge on wine glasses…haha! I can’t drink my wine without it in the right glass. And trust me: the taste does make a difference.

6. You have last minute guests coming over for dinner – how would you decorate for them?

Fresh flowers! I love milk glass vases and whenever I have people over nothing makes my guests or I happier than fresh flowers lightly sprinkled around our table. I also like to throw down a burlap runner down the center of the table. This simple table decor makes the world of a difference and sets the ambiance for a great dinner date.
Screen Shot 2016-08-18 at 8.41.47 AM
7. Who is your favorite Celebrity Interior Designer or Contractor?
Celebrity – Emily Henderson and Joanna Gaines – hands down. Every single one of her posts is such an inspiration to me. Anytime I’m feeling in a funk, all I have to do is read 1-2 of her posts and I’m back up and running! For Jamie? The only thing he has ever turned to is HGTV. Fixer Upper is my fave and Flip or Flop is definitely Jamie’s. He loves the simple and cost effect designs and remodels they put into their homes that appeal to the masses.

8. If you weren’t doing Interior Design & Construction,  what would you be doing?

We’re entrepreneurs at heart so our minds are always jumping from one idea to another – so this is a loaded question! Ha! We always think about this and honestly, we think we’d be doing what we are right now. Our other major focus and source of income behind Construction2Style is the blog side. That is something that we’d love and is still on our list to be doing full time! As of right now, we can’t keep up with client projects to take time to solely focus on our blog. We also always had dreams to launch a product line, and that my friends, just happened. Anything we’d rather be doing, we’d be doing. So we can’t think of anything else we’d be chasing after.

9. What has been your favorite spot in the home to remodel?
We love to focus on kitchens and bathrooms. Both of these spaces are so much fun to remodel and our clients love to make huge transformations to these spaces. In our experience, bathrooms are a little bit more fun for us! Our clients love to be bold with patterns, colors, and textures within their bathrooms – so it’s a lot more fun to create spaces that are in line with the design trends. Regarding kitchens, our clients like to keep it a little bit more safe and classic.

5 Ways to Make Your House Look Like a Luxury Hotel

There is no better feeling than arriving at a beautiful hotel after a long day of travel. Imagine recreating that feeling every time you walk into your home! Check out these 5 tips from our resident Interior Designer, Ariana Lovato of Honeycomb Home Design, for making your house look like a luxury hotel!

  1. Upgrade your bedroom linen game – Invest in high thread count sheets, down comforters and a comfortable mattress…you’ll thank us later! Just like your mother always said, “Make your bed”! Take a few extra minutes every morning before you rush out the door to make sure your bed is staged back to normal. It makes a big difference to walk into your room and see an inviting and comfortable bed!

2. Add a little bit of Mother Nature – Greenery and floral accents are a small investment but pack a big punch. Baby’s Breath, Sunflowers, Gladiolus, and Chrysanthemum are inexpensive yet beautiful flowers to accentuate your home with!

“Think of your home as your own mini sanctuary… it is the place that you should feel most at ease. Create a surrounding that reflects who you are!”

3.  Luxury towels are a MUST – Pottery Barn has the nicest and most durable bath towels. You can even get them monogrammed, if you are feelin’ extra fancy.

4. Go bold with color – Hotels often use accent walls to add drama and interest in a small space. Apply this in your own home by painting three walls the same color, and the fourth wall a few shades darker or wallpaper it! This will instantly add a designer touch!

Designer Spotlight Series – Cynthia Ryan with Circa Studio 8 Interiors

Hi iHomeRegistry Users! We are SO excited to announce our new Designer Spotlight series! Every week, we will feature an amazingly talented Interior Designer that is part of our iHomeRegistry Community! After all, we are the #socialnetworkforinteriordesigners, right?!

This week we are happy to announce Cynthia Ryan, of Circa Studio 8 Interiors! Cynthia shares her tips on which pieces of furniture to splurge on, last minute dinner party decor, and who her Designer crushes are!

1.      How did you get started in Interior Design?

I think I flirted with Interior Design for most of my life. When I was very young, my mechanical engineer father gave me a big red brick building set, which I absolutely loved.  After University of Maryland and Maryland Drafting Institute, I began working in a small lead Architectural section where we would draw all the tracking stations in the world for the Space Shuttle missions. I then transitioned into a Graphic Design position and then onto Kitchen and Bath, which I excelled at and loved! When I relocated to San Diego I started attending The Design Institute of San Diego where I earned my BFA in Interior Design. I felt like it was fate!

2.      Where do you find your inspiration?

Everywhere! Nature, art, museums, travel, antiquities/old cultures and Architecture for sure, as that was where I originally wanted to direct my education. There are also certain museum exhibitions that I just cannot miss!

3.      What are your favorite design publications?

My favorites are Elle Décor, Veranda, San Diego Home and Garden, Luxe, and I recently started subscribing to Milieu… beautiful photography!

4.       When designing a cost-effective space, what are some key things to keep in mind?

I really think the big key is to decide where to invest your money and how to divide the budget up. For example: One can find a sofa at any price range, but how is it built? Will it last? Is it comfortable? I try to figure out how many quality pieces that can be afforded and what we must compromise on. Accessories for example, they are very plentiful and easily obtained at affordable prices, and you don’t have to sit on them!

5.     What pieces of furniture should you splurge and where should you save?

I think sofas and a few good chairs, I think you can sneak in some occasional pieces that are of lesser quality. I say buy a great mattress and bedding, and case goods that last. I have a very high quality sofa in my living room and a 800 lb. walnut armoire in my bedroom that I bought when first married, and I still love them both!

6.       You have last minute guests coming over for dinner – how would you decorate for them?

Fresh Flowers, fresh linens, candles, beautiful ice bucket and glasses. I like a mix of place settings. I am not much for matchy-matchy, Oh and lots of wine! I like these days for it to be somewhat casual and comfortable.

7.      Who is your favorite Celebrity Interior Designer?

I have a few, but Jean Louis Deniot, would probably be my international favorite and top pick! Domestically; Kelly Wearstler, Thomas Pheasant, Barbara Barry, and Jan Showers.

8.      If you weren’t an Interior Designer, what would you be doing?

Maybe Architecture, City Planning, or possibly a Historian or Docent at a historic place!

Why e-Design Is Creating a Buzz

Design by Ariana Lovato
Design by Ariana Lovato

It’s no secret that technology and increased accessibility to the Internet has vastly transformed the way companies are doing business and reaching their customers. The interior design industry is no different.

With the ability to easily connect and communicate with clients through email and online social platforms, interior designers have been tailoring their services for the Internet age with e-Design, attracting a new client base that otherwise might not have the resources to work with a professional.

An industry that once required in-person and in-house meetings has transformed into one that enables virtual consultations, where clients can submit their own photos, room measurements, inspirational images, etc. to interior designers, who then create comprehensive designs and floor plans based on the material received.

In addition to being a cost-effective option for homeowners, it has become a valuable component of many interior designers’ businesses, allowing them to reach more clients who prefer a more flexible approach to home design.

3D home design program

It just so happens that iHomeRegistry is helping to streamline the process for both designers and homeowners by connecting you to each other in our social platform. From our interior designer profile pages and Inspiration Board to our 3D home designer program, we’re making it easier for homeowners and designers to collaborate in an interactive online community and take advantage of the e-Design craze.

And we’re just getting started!
